The 1950s set the stage for the modern cruise industry. Ocean travel on cruise ships was starting to become  a leisurely and luxurious experience. In the 50's there were significant changes in ship design, amenities, and the overall concept of cruising. There was an emphasis on luxury, entertainment, and destination-oriented travel. Cruising started to become a major segment of the travel industry.
